Tis’ the season to be jolly…and a jolly few months it’s been too! It may seem strange to review the life of a blog that has only been live since September, but I thought I would share the progress so far and a little on what to expect from Growing Up Two in the coming year.
First things first…blogging is easy, right?
A lot of people assume that blogging is easy, simply throw together a website and get writing. That may be true of some personal blogs, but if you want to be read and make a career from it, I can assure you there’s a lot more to it than that. To blog properly, write engaging content, present it well, generate readers and boost a site with the bots at Google, it takes time, money and a lot of patience. Those that know me well may recall that I dabbled in running my own blog way back in 2012? Having blogged about investment in Turkey and run websites for others, I knew the basics of blogging, enjoyed writing so thought why not give it a shot? What a nightmare that turned out to be! At that time I had no real focus, I just thought a local Fethiye site would work well. But then, soon after paying for the hosting and setting it up, I found out I was expecting twins and pregnancy quickly took its toll on the site. The result? I had neither the time or energy to keep it running so shut it down within months of setting it up.
So why now? Why did I set up Growing Up Two?
Having had the boys and returned to work when they were 18 months old, I was back to investment and lifestyle blogging. Three years later and my yen to write about the area is still there. I believe Turkey is a wonderful country with a lot to offer visitors, there’s also a heap to write about – and what’s more is that I am now seeing it from a new perspective, as a Mum. Although many have jumped on the local blog train since my original dabble in 2012, there is still so much about the area and family travel here that remains unsaid. It’s good that blogging has now become recognised. People now read and value peoples perspectives. There are many talented bloggers the world over keying their thoughts, opinions, reviews and takes on life and making a decent career from it – I simply want the same. So, after many discussions with the hubby on how to do it and what to call it, Growing Up Two was chosen as it aptly describes our current situation raising twins, and also implies that we are growing up too (true given our previous happy go lucky and haphazard existence!)
Growing Up Two’s growth so far.
From shaky beginnings choosing a free theme that proved to be buggy, and a few nightmares with clashing plugin’s that crashed the site on a couple of occasions, I have now invested in a paid theme and secure hosting which seems to be doing the trick. (Yay!)
Social media wise, Growing Up Two is everywhere (or at least aiming to be!) Twitter is doing well, from 0 to 1,712 followers since September. Facebook is proving more challenging (I refuse to ‘buy’ likes), but we are off to a start running at 422 Likes and 429 Followers since October and growing daily. I had never really used Instagram before so there was a little learning curve here, but now content is uploaded regularly and 212 have followed the feed so far. I have also joined Flipboard, Pinterest and YouTube with intentions to explore growth on these platforms in 2018.

OK, this is where I am asking for your help (pretty please!). I had originally thought of running the site in two halves; one with a parenting focus, the other local travel suggestions and reviews. In a few short weeks, I began to notice that what seemed to be missing locally was the two combined – a family travel site, posts on where to go, what to do, what to eat, local recipes, reviews and tips on how to entertain and raise kids of all ages in the area. My intention is also to include a few posts on how to spend quality ‘adult’ time; the best restaurants, hotels and places to spend quality time kid-free. I will include videos on Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube as I believe real footage gives a true insight on activities, places and what to expect. Am I on the right track? What would really help is a few suggestions from readers on what you want to read and the type of posts you would find interesting. Please do comment and let me know 😉
Growing Up Two 2018
So what are my aims for the blog this coming year? Simple – grow the blog into something fabulous! Here’s the plan;
Regular Content. Now the site basics are running smoothly, I am aiming to write and post more frequently. Work and family constraints limit the time I have to write, but I’m hoping for at least two good posts a week, three if possible.
Attract Contributors and Guest Bloggers. I know Turkey is full of fascinating people with wonderful stories to tell. Do you live here? If so, why did you move here or choose to spend time in Turkey? Are you involved in a local group or charity? Tell us about it. Do you know about the local walks, wildlife, food or history? Have you been somewhere here that you think is fabulous or would appeal to readers? If so, please contact me. I would love to publish stories written by others that share a passion for the area. Fellow bloggers, I would also love to hear from you. Have you traveled, or intend on traveling to Turkey? If so, please consider writing an article for the site – I will of course credit you and include links to your blog and social media.
Social Media. A priority in 2018 is to engage with readers and develop a wider following on the main social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram). I’m also hoping to include videos on activities, destinations, and places of interest which will hopefully boost readership significantly.
Develop Freelance Opportunities. Making reasonable money in Turkey is hard, especially as a foreigner. Wages here are low in comparison to the UK and other countries. One of the main reasons I set up the blog was to showcase my writing and creative skills so I can develop my freelance writing career. So far, in the few weeks the site has been going, I have managed to secure a number of opportunities with PR, tour and travel companies. I am hoping to expand on this in the coming year. Are you looking for a travel writer, blogger or content writer? If so, please get in touch.
Wishing you all a very Happy New Year!
So there you have it, my hopes and dreams for Growing Up Two in the coming year. I would just like to thank you all for your support over the past few months and ask you to please stay tuned to the blog as we grow and expand in the future. I hope you all have a wonderful New Years Eve and a very happy, healthy and prosperous 2018. 🙂
