I opened Twitter to a nice surprise yesterday, Jen from Mumversation had nominated me for the Liebster New Blogger Award. I only started GrowingUpTwo in September, it takes a big chunk of my time between work and the kids so I’m chuffed to know that people are reading!
I’ll start by explaining what the Liebster Award is. It’s an award given to new bloggers by other bloggers to help them get recognition. Nominees are given a list of questions to answer by the person that’s nominated them so readers can get to know them better. Having answered the questions, I get to nominate five other new bloggers and spread the word about them.
First, I just wanted to thank Jen for the nomination and give her wonderful blog, Mumversation a mention. Her blog has some great parenting tips and advice, ideas for crafts to do with young kids and a little about her family life in London. I know Jen is returning to work after maternity leave soon, I do hope she keeps up the good blogging work as the site is very good, do stop by and check it out.
1.Why did I start blogging?
Although Growing Up Two has only been going since September, I am not new to writing or blogging. My day job is as a copywriter and social media manager for a real estate company here in Turkey. I have run their blog now for three years and also written various articles for the press and others on a freelance basis. I have always loved writing but when you’re working for others it’s often hard to have your own voice, you have to adopt theirs. I often need to give away the credit should the post do well as invariably I’m writing on a ‘ghost’ basis. I have lived in Turkey a long time and love my life here in Fethiye. I also love being a twin mum. Growing Up Two gives me a voice. I get to share the things I find interesting, insights on the places my family and I enjoy, and I get to rant and rave on general family life and parenting that others hopefully find amusing or relate to. My blog is me, not what I’m asked to write. It’s also the voice of others I relate to or feature as guests. That’s why I started the site – to have my say and let others have theirs – I just hope the blog grows and people keep reading and contributing.
2. What are my favourite posts on my blog and why?
I think the best posts I have written have been the ones that have come to me on a whim and I wrote quickly, where the words just flowed. I like my rant on how Turkish bugs are too big for bug boxes and also the one on how Peppa Pig stole my eyebrow. Both of these are true stories and I think they aptly describe some of the sillier sides of parenting and a mothers frustrations. My posts about life in Fethiye are also favourites as I think they give others interested in the area an insider view on places to go and what to do. My recent best is my letter to Santa as I think it’s an amusing take on motherhood and the Christmas wishes of a semi-stressed out mum of young kids.
3. What is my favourite place to visit in the UK?
Although I am originally from Birmingham, I spent many years living and working in Cambridge. I think the city is stunning and I often reminisce about my time there. I used to love cycling to work through the parks and past the beautiful university colleges. I loved the social scene, the endless little pubs, Mill Road, punting along the river and the yearly Strawberry Fair. If I was to move back to the UK, I would probably end up in Cambridge again – it certainly stole a little piece of my heart.
4. Who is someone that greatly inspires me? Why?
I could come up with the names of many strong or successful figures to suggest, but in honesty, my parents have been my biggest inspiration. It’s only really since having my boys that I truly appreciate what my Mum and Dad gave to me and how hard it can be to be a parent and guide a child in the right direction. I will forever be grateful for the opportunities my folks created for me, although I may not always have seemed grateful at the time. I am an only child so in many ways I guess I was spoilt. My Dad always worked hard, sent me to a good school and opened my eyes to the world taking us on fabulous family holidays abroad (I first came to Turkey on a blue cruise as a kid in 1986!). I get my wanderlust, my creativity and strong opinions from him. My lovely Irish Mum supported my Dad in his business. She loved to talk and cook a mountain of food, especially roast dinners – I think that’s where my love of conversation stems from and also my love of crispy roast spuds! Thankfully my Dad is still around to give me his advice on life and my career. Unfortunately, I lost my Mother to Parkinson’s soon after the birth of my boys so I never got to say many of the things I would now have said, that she was undoubtedly one of the main inspirations in my life.
5. Do I have any pets?
Yes, Jinx and Kaya are our two official fur babies. They were street cats that Unal and I took on soon after moving in with one another back in 2006. Jinx has recently adopted a feral kitten the kids have fallen in love with and nicknamed ‘Bob’. We have tried rehoming him but he just keeps coming back. I am guessing he will soon be part of the family. We also feed a number of chickens and a couple of turkey’s that peck around our garden as they visit us daily from the farm next door.
6. What celebrity would I most like to be?
Ouch..this is a hard one. I’m happy in my own skin so there’s no one I would like to be. I would like Branson’s business mind, wealth and success, the body of a Victorias Secret model, the ability to play the piano like Jools Holland and to be able to sing like Adele – but I’m also a realist, that’s just never going to happen – I’m happy being me!
7. What’s my favourite food?
Favourite has to be Thai Green Curry or my mum’s roast beef dinners.
8. What’s my least favourite food?
I hate, loathe and detest pickles – evil things that make burgers taste bad!
9. What am I most proud of in my life?
My family. My boys are everything to me.
10. What is the first thing I would do if I won the lottery?
Faint. Then perhaps jump around a lot chanting “it’s a miracle!” (I don’t play the lottery)
11. Describe myself in three words.
Focused. Creative. Thoughtful.
